Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

Alajuela is an inland province in the north-central region of Costa Rica. To the north of Alajuela lies Nicaraugua and surrounding its other sides are the Costa Rican provinces Guanacaste, Puntarenas, San José and Heredia. The Alajuela province covers nearly 10,000 square kilometers and has a population of over 700,000 people. The beautiful Occidental El Tucano & Spa resort is located north of its capital city, Alajuela.

San José Metro Area
The Alajuela province is just north of the city of San José, the capital of Costa Rica and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in all of Central America. The city is nestled in the fertile and scenic Central Valley and is famous for rising above the pollution, congestion and overpopulation problems common in other Latin American cities, offering a vibrant nightlife and special charm that endears all its visitors.

San José Highlands
The San José Highlands are easily accessible from the capital city of San José and is famous for its stunning natural beauty. The fertile and tropical Highlands include massive Volcanoes in the north, an impressive ridge of mountains to the south and a handful of densely populated towns in the northwest. The Juan Santamaria International Airport and Parque Nacional Volcan Poas are also located in the San José Highlands region.

Tenorio and Miravalles Volcanoes
The Tenorio and Miravalles Volano area is set in the lush North Pacific region on the border region of the Alajuela and Guanacaste Provinces. This area offers a wide variety of hiking trails and other outdoor activities as well as the impressing four volcanic peaks and twin craters, surrounded by green and vibrant cloud forest and tropical fauna.

Monteverde Region
The second most popular destination in Costa Rica, the Monteverde Region is one of the most natural and breathtaking regions in Costa Rica and all of Central America. Located in the border between the Alajuela and Guanacaste Provinces, this area includes two cloud forest reserves and a wide plethora of exotic species.

Arenal Volcano/Northern Lowlands
The Arenal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, regularly spewing its superheated steam and ash and shaking the region with its regular eruptions. Located between the Alajuela and Guanacaste Provinces, the Northern Lowlands offers visitors the rare glimpse of flowing lava in a touristy and beautiful region of Costa Rica.
