Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica
Guanacaste is located in the most northwestern part of Costa Rica, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west, Nicaragua to the north, Alajuela Province to the east and the Puntarenas Province to the South. The capital city of Guanacaste is Liberia, home to roughly twenty percent of the provinces total population. Guanacaste is the least populated of all provinces in Costa Rica.
Northwest Pacific Coast/Tamarindo Area
Famous for it’s stunning beaches and toiling surf, the Northwest Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is perhaps Guanacaste’s most valuable real estate. The area is famous for its high quality waves that bring thousands of surfers to its sandy beaches throughout the year, as well as its easily accessible diving areas. The rich diversity of marine fauna and species is quickly turning small fishing villages like Tamarindo into increasingly popular destinations for tourists and experienced divers alike.
The Nicoya Peninsula is Costa Rica’s largest and sits just south of the Nortwest Pacific Coast region. Both rugged and luxurious, this peninsula is an extremely popular destination for tourists seeking sun and adventure. The unique and rugged peninsula is home to everything from stunning nature reserves to world-class luxury hotels.
Considered the second most popular destination of tourism in Costa Rica, the Monteverde area is home to the most breathtaking and natural of all attractions in Guanacaste. Costa Rica’s most beautiful cloud forests and fauna thrive in this area, including the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, and the Monteverde and Santa Elena settlements.
Northern Lowlands/Arenal Volcano
The Arenal Volcano is located in the Northern Lowlands region of Guanacaste and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. On a daily basis the Arenal volcano spews a mixture of ash and molten lava from its belly, rumbling the region as it spurts forth clouds of superheated steam. The Tabacon Hot Springs Resort and several other spas are also located in the area.
The Tenorio Volcano area is a must-see destination for the action-seeking tourist in Costa Rica. The area is full of hiking trails and various adventure services that lead you between cloud forests, majestic waterfalls, and over four volcanic peaks and craters, including both the Tenorio Volcano and Miravalles Volcano.
